Blue Dogs at The Rialto

The Rialto, 1620 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC

The Blue Dogs are coming to The Rialto! Since 1987, South Carolina’s The Blue Dogs have been pulling bits from bluegrass, country, and rhythm & blues to season its own roots rock stew, which produces a sound made of a strong vocal blend of band leaders Bobby Houck (acoustic guitar) and Hank Futch (upright bass) mixed with twangy guitars, pedal steel and percussion, for spontaneous shows that rock.

South Carolina Songwriters Showcase live at Eddie’s Attic, featuring Andrew Hyra from Billy Pilgrim, Bobby Houck of Blue Dogs, and Warren Bazemore & Shane Williams of Finnegan Bell

Shane Williams and Warren Bazemore of Finnegan Bell were approached to organize a writers in the round at The Southern in Mount Pleasant a few years back. They got in touch with their friend Bobby Houck, of Charleston’s legendary Blue Dogs to help pull the night together. Eventually, Williams reached out to Andrew Hyra, from Atlanta’s Billy Pilgrim, who had recently made Mount Pleasant home, to join in on the action. So for a few Thursdays a month, they showed up without a practice to entertain a loud barroom with original songs. Each of the singers were familiar with a few of the others tunes. Shane, Warren and Bobby had co written some songs together that were featured on the Blue Dogs Big Dreamers album. The three of them were acquainted with Hyra’s Billy Pilgrim material from the duos numerous runs into South Carolina in the nineties. These the seeds of a musical chemistry that has evolved organically at the Southern. The four part harmony reminds Hyra of the Wagon Wheels, which he was a part of when they wowed the Attics audiences in the nineties, winning an Atlanta music award for best folk group along the way. At times the four part harmony is luminous and transcendent and can render the loud Southern crowd silent. It’s a magical current and is sure to wow the Attic crowd anew.

The quartet has not settled on a name. This is brand new. No need to chase down those barriers yet. Each of the different members have impressive musical resumes. Bobby is the lead singer and songwriter of Charleston’s incredible Blue Dogs, South Carolina legends. Andrew is a co founding member of Billy Pilgrim, the storied folk duo who christened the Attic with Michelle Malone on its opening weekend in 1992. Finnegan Bell is not capable of writing a bad song. The duo weaves a tight dynamic harmonic spell around every entrancing number. The four of them make some beautiful music. Come check it out on January 10!

Blue Dogs Summer Shindig Vol. 2

 — (EDT, UTC-04) — (EDT, UTC-04)

The Refinery, 1640 Meeting Street Rd , Charleston, SC

The Blue Dogs Summer Shindig kicked off on June 1, 2024, at The Refinery in Charleston SC, giving the longtime Lowcountry band The Blue Dogs (est. 1987) the chance to dip its collective paws into the festival milieu and invite like-minded bands from its past and present to celebrate with a full afternoon and evening of music!

"Volume One: Back to the 90's" featured three bands -- Charleston's Uncle Mingo, the SC upstate's Cravin' Melon, and NC/GA canine cousins Jupiter Coyote -- that the Dogs toured with and/or crossed paths with many times during the decade when each of them toured the most, the 1990's. Each band had a set, and the night ended with a group jam with members of each band.

Acoustic solo/duo performers living in the Carolinas were also invited to play a few songs between sets. These talented singer/songwriters included Andrew Hyra of Billy Pilgrim, Shane Williams and Warren Bazemore of Finnegan Bell, Jacob Johnson, and Emily Curtis.

The show goes on in 2025 on Saturday, May 31, with "Volume 2: Carolina Road Warriors," titled such to acknowledge and honor each of this year's bands, all of whom traveled many thousands of miles and played hundreds of venues around the Carolinas and well beyond, especially in the 80's, 90's, and 00's.

This year, the Dogs are bringing in…

...first and foremost, North Carolina legends The Connells, based in the capital city of Raleigh from 1984 to this day 41 years later, and one of the only bands from our region who literally traveled the world -- and one could say, thanks to their touring and major exposure they received on MTV back in that heydey, they are best known for their song "'74-'75," which was a number one hit in Norway and Sweden in 1995 while reaching the top 10 in a total of 11 European countries;

another NC band formed in the 80's just down the road, in Chapel Hill, Dillon Fence, who toured the country with Hootie and the Blowfish on their first major tour and still draw crowds to this day;

and another TWO bands who are based right here in the Lowcountry: FINNEGAN BELL, the sweet singer-songwriter duo who write nothing but killer songs, and who have performed with the Blue Dogs many times in recent years at the Charleston Music Hall and other venues; and local Charleston heroes, JUNCO PARTNER, made up of a who's who of Charleston and South Carolina musicians who rock the house with cool covers in the southern rock/jam/boogie category.

General admission as well as VIP tickets will be available for the show. VIP ticket holders have exclusive access to the "upper deck" with premium viewing at The Refinery with a dedicated entrance and first-come, first-served seating; private newly renovated restrooms; and a separate VIP bar with premium spirits not available elsewhere.

4pm Doors 4:05-4:15 Henry Futch III 4:20-5pm Finnegan Bell 5:15-6:15 Junco Partner 6:30-7:45 Dillon Fence 8:00-9:15 Blue Dogs 9:30-10:45 The Connells

Vibes of '95 featuring The Blue Dogs, Jupiter Coyote, and Cravin' Melon.

The Blue Dogs have been blending the genres they grew up with - bluegrass, country, rock & soul since 1987. “Turning bluegrass on its ear by creating what’s now referred to as ‘Americana’ or ‘alternative country’ before those terms were commonplace” [Charlotte Observer]. More than 30 years later, The Blue Dogs continue to perform unpredictable and upbeat live shows with original songs that capture a country-rock vibe.

Cravin' Melon was formed at Clemson University in 1994 and gained popularity in the regional live music scene. In 1997, they signed to Mercury Records and released Red Clay Harvest. The album spawned a minor radio hit, "Come Undone", which peaked at #37 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. The band's style and geographical roots prompted frequent comparisons to contemporaries and tourmates Hootie & the Blowfish and Edwin McCain.

Jupiter Coyote are self-described Mountain Rock Legends. A mixture of good ole' Southern Rock & Funky Appalachian Boogie.
